First book: Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo
Disclaimer: some religious themes (her father is the preacher), mention of drinking alcohol.

Second Book: The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The story follows a young prince who embarks on a journey, visiting different planets, including Earth. Themes of human nature, adults, loneliness, friendship, love, and loss.
